Information used for registering domain name including contact information, length of registration and name servers (servers resolving domain name to IP address) determines legitimacy of domains. Google utilizes pattern matching between information about developer’s domain with known illegitimate domains. Google also keeps a check on contact information, name servers or hosting company for relative changes.

A good name server hosts variety of domains and have history of those domains, at the same time a bad name server hosts domains for pornography sites, doorway pages or domains with commercial words. Commercial words are common indicator of SPAM and primarily bulk domains from single registrar or name server are brand new. Brand new name servers need not always be bad unless they have a combination of other negative factors.

The cheapest domain registrars have a large number of doorway domains registered.

A web developer should choose a reputable person who registers domains and have experience with corporate companies. One must find ISPs by doing WHOIS lookup on highly ranked sites and using name servers from top level ISPs. One must register domain for long periods say ten years at a stretch. A web developer should be careful and use only reputable ISP which does not deal with pornography domains.
